DAVID HAHN FOR PRESIDENT

I am a lifelong Democrat, from a long line of Democrats. Midwestern Democrats, born from Prairie Populists (my Great Grandparents lived in a sod house) to New Deal Democrats to Civil Rights Democrats to Protecting the Working-Class Democrats.

From the time Governor and then Senator J.J. Exon counseled me as president of the Nebraska Young Democrats, I have actively pursued the core principles of the Democratic Party – to create a fair and just society, to engage in politics as a noble enterprise, and to recognize that working with everyone; listening, explaining, and promoting good ideas and good people is the key to political success and our common good.

I have no idea how many shoes I have worn out walking in county parades for democratic candidates in all parts of Nebraska, or the nights of envelope stuffing, and the rallies for unions and union workers.

A big part of my career as a young lawyer in Nebraska was devoted to saving family farms and ranches during the agricultural crisis of the 80’s and 90’s. I was involved with good land and soil practices and helped to fuse the idea of maintaining family farming and ranching with solid conservation practices.

Now it may have been smart or it may have been naïve to run for Governor as a blue Democrat in crimson red Nebraska, but that’s what I, with the support of my loving family, undertook in the 2006 year election. Not a bad result for a young candidate. Regardless of that loss to a sitting Republican governor, I learned that being a Democrat is ALL about listening to the people, not the high and the mighty; but to the working Moms and Dads, the shopkeepers, the professionals trying to serve their communities, and to the elderly, fearing what was coming in the years ahead in a rapidly changing world.

As a high school student, I had friends who introduced me to shortwave and amateur radio, which lead to listening to the world, listening to the perspectives and needs and realities of life beyond my Midwestern upbringing. Later this focus on communication led me into the digital technology business and the early days of the Internet. I’ve written software, created digital business, worked with technologists worldwide. As a young lawyer and entrepreneur, I counseled Senator Exon on various aspects of the Communications Decency Act. My Geek gene, I guess, has always been active and I seem to “get” technology and technologists. I see a positive role for technology in our country…from city to rural. It can be positive aspect of society.

We Democrats have had a heck of a ride here in the last months. I believe in the democratic way; principled debate and discussion of the best and better ways forward. The personal attack approach is not my approach and never has been. Reason, logic, discussion and debate are core to progressive politics. That is the Democratic Party I grew up in and the one I desire to promote.
